“La Mia Mamma”: Italian mums take turns cooking in London to impress with regional cuisine
Hosting Italian mums for an uncommon restaurant
There is a unique restaurant in London serving typical Italian food, but in a very particular way. “La Mia Mamma” is run by mums only, from different Italian regions. Every three months, some mothers of expatriates arrive in London from different Italian regions in order to have same kind of vacation. The reasons for their arrival may be various: some want to spend time with their children or grandchildren, others just look for a solo trip and others wish to learn a new language. When you eat at La Mia Mamma, it feels like Italy and that is the reason why the restaurant has gained success in the last few years. As a matter of fact, mums don’t even talk in English to customers and, actually, they speak in their native dialect – even to yell at the people when they’re not finishing their dishes. Passers-by could also notice them making fresh pasta at the restaurant window. English tabloids refer to them as “The Mammas” and they are completely in love with this concept, as well as the fancy English district of Chelsea, where they are located.

Londoners can have a unique experience at “La Mia Mamma”
Luca Maggiora, Corrado Mozzillo and Giuseppe Corsaro are the minds behind this special restaurant; the first hosted mum was Sicilian. In the following months, other mums from different Italian region have joined this project, making the restaurant more and more popular. And yet, the purpose is to cover all the 20 Italian regions. With their arrival in London, the mothers bring their own typical regional cuisine with them. Therefore, guests not only can taste the famous Italian dishes – as pasta or pizza – but, above all, they can have some particular and less known specialties from the regional tradition. The beauty of “La Mia Mamma” also lays in that: guests enjoy dishes belonging to ancient recipes, passed on from generation to generation and now arrived in the Capital. The current health situation does not scare the mums: they have set up a deli and an online shop: they are positive towards the future of the restaurant.

Next stop, Berlin?
Such an original project could work in Berlin as well. This city finds itself in a very similar situation: many young Italian men and women have moved to Berlin in the last years and Berliners love Italian cuisine. If “La Mia Mamma” will ever decide to expand in other cities, Berlin would be a great choice: Italian mothers and Berliners would make a charming and especial combo, for sure. It’s very nice to know about these new project that allow to enjoy the experience of mothers who cook with love. We hope that this project will expand in the future and continue to delight the palates of many.
